Januar 1 - NEW YEAR'S DAY

New Year's Day has been celebrated in the States since Roman Times, when sacrifices were given to Janus, the two-faced Roman deity (двуликое римское божество) who looked back on the past and forward to the future.
Traditions:
1. New Year's Resolution (people promise to do or not to do something in the coming year).
2. The tradition of using a baby as a symbol of rebirth.
3. Food like a ring (it is thought to bring luck).

February 14 - ST. VALENTINE'S DAY

This day is the festival of two third-centure martyrs (мученики), both named St. Valentines. It is unknown why this day is associated with lovers. But it is so.
Traditions:
1. Sending Valentine cards to beloved people.
2. Symbol is Cupid (Cupid is associated to this holiday as he was the son of Venus, the Roman god os love and beauty

EASTER SUNDAY

This holiday is observed in all Christian churches. Easter commemorates the Resurerection of Jesus (Воскрешение Иисуса). It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon which occurs on the next day after March 21 and is celebrated between March 22 and April 25. The symbol os Easter is, of course, exchange of egg and a rabbit.

April 1 - FOOL'S DAY

The history of this holiday is not clear. Some people associated it with the first day os spring. Different jokes on relatives, friends and collegues are the usual thing on this day.

May - MOTHER'S DAY

This holiday is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, as it was proposed by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia in 1907. Nowadays children give their mothers and grandmothers different cards, gifts and flowers.

June - FATHER'S DAY

It is celebrated on the third Sunday in Kune. It was first observed on June 19, 1910. This holiday is similar to the Mother's Day.

July 4 - INDEPENDENCE DAY

On July 4, 1776, the American colonies declared their independence from Britain. Many families celebrate the Fourth of July by having picnics and watching fireworks.

October 31 - HALLOWEEN

This holiday is not an official one, but it is a very special day. It is traditionally associated in some countries with old customs such as telling ghost stories, bonfires and so on. This is the way the Celts welcomed the beginning of winter.

November - THANKSGIVING

This holiday is observed nationally on the fourth Tuesday in November by Act of Congress in 1941. Most Americans believe that the holiday dates back to the day of thanks ordered by Governor Bradford of Plymouth Colony in New England in 1621, but scholars say that day of thanks is celebrated from ancient times.

December 25 - Christmas

Christmas is the most widely celebrated holiday in the USA. It is observed as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus. Christmas customs are centures old. Use of such plant as a holly (остролист) comes from the ancient belief that such plants blossomed at Christmas. Comparatively recent is the Cgristmas tree, first set up in Germany in the 17th century, and the use of candles on trees developed from the belief that candles appeared by miracles on the trees at Christmas.
